The bond between my sister and I is unbreakable, even though we have different views on shopping and fashion. Despite her struggles in finding clothes that fit her properly, she remains a successful businesswoman determined to maintain her professional image. Our experiences have taught us the importance of inclusion in the fashion industry, and we hope to inspire change for all who face similar challenges.
A few months ago, I received an urgent email from my sister titled; “Shirt Crisis.” The email reads:
“Harmony, Is it time for Kaftans? I feel most comfortable in a men’s short-sleeved button-down Oxford shirt and have been buying them for years, YEARS at JCPenney! I like a “roomy” shirt, and I always tuck in the shirt with some extra pull-out for comfort. My “go-to” work shirt used to be available in various colors. Still, as of late, it’s just blue, blue, and blue. And, just as I was getting frustrated with the lack of color choice, my favorite “go-to” work shirt is no longer available anywhere! I’m left with nothing. HELP! I am confused, frustrated, and at my wit’s end – I can’t find a work shirt now, and while I don’t want to spend the money on bespoke fashion, I must have work shirts, and they must fit and be comfortable all day. Do you have any ideas?”
Hell, yell yes, my sister! Finally, she was ready to be called IN instead of OUT! I gave my sister a custom experience, from mock-up to fitting to finding shirting fabric she loves. She is over the moon excited. PSA! This is a reminder that ready-made clothing doesn’t mean it is made for your particular, unique body. Almost all clothing needs alteration to fit correctly. Don’t be fooled by mass consumption, size charts, or the “one size fits all” mentality.
Crisis averted! Here is my sister’s sweet love note and review of her experience:
“Harmony, I don’t know why I waited so long to call on your expertise. I didn’t know what to do when they stopped making my favorite shirt. I tried buying different brands in the same size, but the fit was never right. I was at my wit’s end trying to find “my shirt” somewhere else. Having custom-made shirts never even entered my mind as a solution – thank goodness I listened to you! Not only did you solve a major problem for me, but the fit of a custom-made shirt was even better than I could have imagined. Getting to pick out my fabric helps me make each shirt more “me” as well. I don’t have to worry about fit or aesthetics anymore. I am so happy I used your services- you are a genius. I’ve never felt more confident or pampered. Bespoke is for me moving forward.”
